This is a list of some of the world’s music genre and their definitions.

African Folk – Music held to be typical of a nation or ethnic group, known to all segments of its society, and preserved usually by oral tradition.

Afro jazz – Refers to jazz music which has been heavily influenced by African music. The music took elements of marabi, swing and American jazz and synthesized this into a unique fusion. The first band to really achieve this synthesis was the South African band Jazz Maniacs.

Afro-beat – Is a combination of Yoruba music, jazz, Highlife, and funk rhythms, fused with African percussion and vocal styles, popularized in Africa in the 1970s.

Afro-Pop – Afropop or Afro Pop is a term sometimes used to refer to contemporary African pop music. The term does not refer to a specific style or sound, but is used as a general term to describe African popular music.

Apala – Originally derived from the Yoruba people of Nigeria. It is a percussion-based style that developed in the late 1930s, when it was used to wake worshippers after fasting during the Islamic holy month of Ramadan.

Assiko – is a popular dance from the South of Cameroon. The band is usually based on a singer accompanied with a guitar, and a percussionnist playing the pulsating rhythm of Assiko with metal knives and forks on an empty bottle.

Batuque - is a music and dance genre from Cape Verde.

Bend Skin – is a kind of urban Cameroonian popular music. Kouchoum Mbada is the most well-known group associated with the genre.

Benga – Is a musical genre of Kenyan popular music. It evolved between the late 1940s and late 1960s, in Kenya’s capital city of Nairobi.

Biguine – is a style of music that originated in Martinique in the 19th century. By combining the traditional bele music with the polka, the black musicians of Martinique created the biguine, which comprises three distinct styles, the biguine de salon, the biguine de bal and the biguines de rue.

Bikutsi – is a musical genre from Cameroon. It developed from the traditional styles of the Beti, or Ewondo, people, who live around the city of Yaounde.

Bongo Flava – it has a mix of rap, hip hop, and R&B for starters but these labels don’t do it justice. It’s rap, hip hop and R&B Tanzanian style: a big melting pot of tastes, history, culture and identity.

Cadence - is a particular series of intervals or chords that ends a phrase, section, or piece of music.

Calypso – is a style of Afro-Caribbean music which originated in Trinidad at about the start of the 20th century. The roots of the genre lay in the arrival of African slaves, who, not being allowed to speak with each other, communicated through song.

Chaabi – is a popular music of Morocco, very similar to the Algerian Rai.

Chimurenga – is a Zimbabwean popular music genre coined by and popularised by Thomas Mapfumo. Chimurenga is a Shona language word for struggle.

Chouval Bwa - features percussion, bamboo flute, accordion, and wax-paper/comb-type kazoo. The music originated among rural Martinicans.

Christian Rap - is a form of rap which uses Christian themes to express the songwriter’s faith.

Coladeira – is a form of music in Cape Verde. Its element ascends to funacola which is a mixture of funanáa and coladera. Famous coladera musicians includes Antoninho Travadinha.

Contemporary Christian - is a genre of popular music which is lyrically focused on matters concerned with the Christian faith.

Country – is a blend of popular musical forms originally found in the Southern United States and the Appalachian Mountains. It has roots in traditional folk music, Celtic music, blues, gospel music, hokum, and old-time music and evolved rapidly in the 1920s.

Dance Hall - is a type of Jamaican popular music which developed in the late 1970s, with exponents such as Yellowman and Shabba Ranks. It is also known as bashment. The style is characterized by a deejay singing and toasting (or rapping) over raw and danceable music riddims.

Disco – is a genre of dance-oriented pop music that was popularized in dance clubs in the mid-1970s.

Folk – in the most basic sense of the term, is music by and for the common people.

Freestyle – is a form of electronic music that is heavily influenced by Latin American culture.

Fuji – is a popular Nigerian musical genre. It arose from the improvisation Ajisari/were music tradition, which is a kind of Muslim music performed to wake believers before dawn during the Ramadan fasting season.

Funana – is a mixed Portuguese and African music and dance from Santiago, Cape Verde. It is said that the lower part of the body movement is African, and the upper part Portuguese.

Funk – is an American musical style that originated in the mid- to late-1960s when African American musicians blended soul music, soul jazz and R&B into a rhythmic, danceable new form of music.

Gangsta rap - is a subgenre of hip-hop music which developed during the late 1980s. ‘Gangsta’ is a variation on the spelling of ‘gangster’. After the popularity of Dr. Dre’s The Chronic in 1992, gangsta rap became the most commercially lucrative subgenre of hip-hop.

Genge – is a genre of hip hop music that had its beginnings in Nairobi, Kenya. The name was coined and popularized by Kenyan rapper Nonini who started off at Calif Records. It is a style that incorporates hip hop, dancehall and traditional African music styles. It is commonly sung in Sheng(slung),Swahili or local dialects.

Gnawa – is a mixture of African, Berber, and Arabic religious songs and rhythms. It combines music and acrobatic dancing. The music is both a prayer and a celebration of life.

Gospel – is a musical genre characterized by dominant vocals (often with strong use of harmony) referencing lyrics of a religious nature, particularly Christian.

Highlife – is a musical genre that originated in Ghana and spread to Sierra Leone and Nigeria in the 1920s and other West African countries.

Hip-Hop – is a style of popular music, typically consisting of a rhythmic, rhyming vocal style called rapping (also known as emceeing) over backing beats and scratching performed on a turntable by a DJ.

House – is a style of electronic dance music that was developed by dance club DJs in Chicago in the early to mid-1980s. House music is strongly influenced by elements of the late 1970s soul- and funk-infused dance music style of disco.

Indie – is a term used to describe genres, scenes, subcultures, styles and other cultural attributes in music, characterized by their independence from major commercial record labels and their autonomous, do-it-yourself approach to recording and publishing.

Instrumental – An instrumental is, in contrast to a song, a musical composition or recording without lyrics or any other sort of vocal music; all of the music is produced by musical instruments.

Isicathamiya – is an a cappella singing style that originated from the South African Zulus.

Jazz – is an original American musical art form which originated around the beginning of the 20th century in African American communities in the Southern United States out of a confluence of African and European music traditions.

Jit - is a style of popular Zimbabwean dance music. It features a swift rhythm played on drums and accompanied by a guitar.

Juju – is a style of Nigerian popular music, derived from traditional Yoruba percussion. It evolved in the 1920s in urban clubs across the countries. The first jùjú recordings were by Tunde King and Ojoge Daniel from the 1920s.

Kizomba – is one of the most popular genres of dance and music from Angola. Sung generally in Portuguese, it is a genre of music with a romantic flow mixed with African rhythm.

Kwaito – is a music genre that emerged in Johannesburg, South Africa in the early 1990s. It is based on house music beats, but typically at a slower tempo and containing melodic and percussive African samples which are looped, deep basslines and often vocals, generally male, shouted or chanted rather than sung or rapped.

Kwela – is a happy, often pennywhistle based, street music from southern Africa with jazzy underpinnings. It evolved from the marabi sound and brought South African music to international prominence in the 1950s.

Lingala – Soukous (also known as Soukous or Congo, and previously as African rumba) is a musical genre that originated in the two neighbouring countries of Belgian Congo and French Congo during the 1930s and early 1940s

Makossa – is a type of music which is most popular in urban areas in Cameroon. It is similar to soukous, except it includes strong bass rhythm and a prominent horn section. It originated from a type of Duala dance called kossa, with significant influences from jazz, ambasse bey, Latin music, highlife and rumba.

Malouf - a kind of music imported to Tunisia from Andalusia after the Spanish conquest in the 15th century.

Mapouka – also known under the name of Macouka, is a traditional dance from the south-east of the Ivory Coast in the area of Dabou, sometimes carried out during religious ceremonies.

Maringa – is a West African musical genre. It evolved among the Kru people of Sierra Leone and Liberia, who used Portuguese guitars brought by sailors, combining local melodies and rhythms with Trinidadian calypso.

Marrabenta - is a form of Mozambican dance music. It was developed in Maputo, the capital city of Mozambique, formerly Laurenco Marques.

Mazurka – is a Polish folk dance in triple meter with a lively tempo, containing a heavy accent on the third or second beat. It is always found to have either a triplet, trill, dotted eighth note pair, or ordinary eighth note pair before two quarter notes.

Mbalax – is the national popular dance music of Senegal. It is a fusion of popular dance musics from the West such as jazz, soul, Latin, and rock blended with sabar, the traditional drumming and dance music of Senegal.

Mbaqanga – is a style of South African music with rural Zulu roots that continues to influence musicians worldwide today. The style was originated in the early 1960s.

Mbube – is a form of South African vocal music, made famous by the South African group Ladysmith Black Mambazo. The word mbube means “lion” in Zulu

Merengue – is a type of lively, joyful music and dance that comes from the Dominican Republic

Morna – is a genre of Cape Verdean music, related to Portuguese fado, Brazilian modinha, Argentinian tango, and Angolan lament.

Museve – is a popular Zimbabwe music genre. Artists include Simon Chimbetu and Alick Macheso

Oldies – term commonly used to describe a radio format that usually concentrates on Top 40 music from the ’50s, ’60s and ’70s. Oldies are typically from R&B, pop and rock music genres.

Pop – is an ample and imprecise category of modern music not defined by artistic considerations but by its potential audience or prospective market.

Quadrille – is a historic dance performed by four couples in a square formation, a precursor to traditional square dancing. It is also a style of music.

R&B - is a popular music genre combining jazz, gospel, and blues influences, first performed by African American artists.

Rai - is a form of folk music, originated in Oran, Algeria from Bedouin shepherds, mixed with Spanish, French, African and Arabic musical forms, which dates back to the 1930s and has been primarily evolved by women in the culture.

Ragga – is a sub-genre of dancehall music or reggae, in which the instrumentation primarily consists of electronic music; sampling often serves a prominent role in raggamuffin music as well.

Rap – is the rhythmic singing delivery of rhymes and wordplay, one of the elements of hip hop music and culture.

Rara – is a form of festival music used for street processions, typically during Easter Week.

Reggae – is a music genre first developed in Jamaica in the late 1960s. A particular music style that originated following on the development of ska and rocksteady. Reggae is based on a rhythm style characterized by regular chops on the off-beat, known as the skank.

Reggaeton – is a form of urban music which became popular with Latin American youth during the early 1990s. Originating in Panama, Reggaeton blends Jamaican music influences of reggae and dancehall with those of Latin America, such as bomba, plena, merengue, and bachata as well as that of hip hop and Electronica.

Rock – is a form of popular music with a prominent vocal melody accompanied by guitar, drums, and bass. Many styles of rock music also use keyboard instruments such as organ, piano, synthesizers.

Rumba – is a family of music rhythms and dance styles that originated in Africa and were introduced to Cuba and the New World by African slaves.

Salegy – is a popular type of Afropop styles exported from Madagascar. This Sub-Saharan African folk music dance originated with the Malagasy language of Madagascar, Southern Africa.

Salsa – is a diverse and predominantly Spanish Caribbean genre that is popular across Latin America and among Latinos abroad.

Samba – is one of the most popular forms of music in Brazil. It is widely viewed as Brazil’s national musical style.

Sega – is an evolved combination of traditional Music of Seychelles,Mauritian and Réunionnais music with European dance music like polka and quadrilles.

Seggae – is a music genre invented in the mid 1980s by the Mauritian Rasta singer, Joseph Reginald Topize who was sometimes known as Kaya, after a song title by Bob Marley. Seggae is a fusion of sega from the island country, Mauritius, and reggae.

Semba – is a traditional type of music from the Southern-African country of Angola. Semba is the predecessor to a variety of music styles originated from Africa, of which three of the most famous are Samba (from Brazil), Kizomba (Angolan style of music derived directly from Zouk music) and Kuduro (or Kuduru, energetic, fast-paced Angolan Techno music, so to speak).

Shona Music – is the music of the Shona people of Zimbabwe. There are several different types of traditional Shona music including mbira, singing, hosho and drumming. Very often, this music will be accompanied by dancing, and participation by the audience.

Ska – is a music genre that originated in Jamaica in the late 1950s and was a precursor to rocksteady and reggae. Ska combined elements of Caribbean mento and calypso with American jazz and rhythm and blues.

Slow Jam – is typically a song with an R&B-influenced melody. Slow jams are commonly R&B ballads or just downtempo songs. The term is most commonly reserved for soft-sounding songs with heavily emotional or romantic lyrical content.

Soca – is a form of dance music that originated in Trinidad from calypso. It combines the melodic lilting sound of calypso with insistent (usually electronic in recent music) percussion.

Soukous – is a musical genre that originated in the two neighbouring countries of Belgian Congo and French Congo during the 1930s and early 1940s, and which has gained popularity throughout Africa.

Soul – is a music genre that combines rhythm and blues and gospel music, originating in the United States.

Taarab – is a music genre popular in Tanzania. It is influenced by music from the cultures with a historical presence in East Africa, including music from East Asia, Sub-Saharan Africa, North Africa, the Middle East and Europe. Taarab rose to prominence in 1928 with the rise of the genre’s first star, Siti binti Saad.

Tango – is a style of music that originated among European immigrant populations of Argentina and Uruguay. It is traditionally played by a sextet, known as the orquesta típica, which includes two violins, piano, doublebass, and two bandoneons.

Waka – is a popular Islamic-oriented Yoruba musical genre. It was pioneered and made popular by Alhaja Batile Alake from Ijebu, who took the genre into the mainstream Nigerian music by playing it at concerts and parties; also, she was the first waka singer to record an album.

Wassoulou – is a genre of West African popular music, named after the region of Wassoulou. It is performed mostly by women, using lyrics that address women’s issues regarding childbearing, fertility and polygamy.

Ziglibithy – is a style of Ivorian popular music that developed in the 1970s. It was the first major genre of music from the Ivory Coast. The first major pioneer of the style was Ernesto Djedje.

Zouglou – is a dance oriented style of music from the Côte d’Ivoire (Ivory Coast) that first evolved in the 1990s. It started with students (les parents du Campus) from the University of Abidjan.

Zouk – is a style of rhythmic music originating from the French islands of Guadeloupe and Martinique. It has its roots in kompa music from Haiti, cadence music from Dominica, as popularised by Grammacks and Exile One.

The electromagnetic spectrum, the range of all possible frequencies of electromagnetic radiation, includes the K band of the microwave bands or radio waves with wavelengths that could be as long as one meter (m) or as short as one millimeter (mm) which is equivalent with frequencies between 300 MHz (.3 GHz) and 300 GHz. And one of them is Ka band, the one which covers 26.5 GHz to 40 GHz.

Made by Adriano Cachele, Mauricio Delgado Hershlag and Stephen Lutz, Ka Band comes from the German word “Kurz” and its position–directly “above” K band–making “Kurz-above,” or simply Ka band.

The 30.20 GHz band is used in the following: communications satellites (COMSAT), an artificial satellite positioned in space for the telecommunication purposes; uplink, sometimes abbreviated as UL or U/L, is a part of a communications link for the transfer of signals from an Earth terminal to a satellite or to an airborne platform), either the 27.5 GHz and 31 GHz bands; and high-resolution, close-range targeting military airplane radars, a system to detect objects through radio waves to know the range, altitude, direction, or speed of objects.

Some frequencies in this band also used it for vehicle speed detection by law enforcement. NASA’s Kepler Mission, through an American space observatory (Kepler satellite), uses Ka band to downlink the scientific data collected by space telescope as they unravel Earth-like planets orbiting the stars.

This frequency range allows higher bandwidth communication in satellite communications.

Downloading Music Via Broadband

Everybody’s either downloading music or talking about it at the moment, with MP3 players now gracing many people’s wish lists. This article aims to introduce you to the concept of downloading music, its pros and cons, where to download and demystify the confusion surrounding online music distribution.

Where to download?

There are a variety of places to download music and the options can be quite daunting, generally the most popular is iTunes, which is also very easy to use and has the backing of most major record labels.

There are a also variety of other downloading sites including: iTunes, Napster, MyCokeMusic, Woolworths, 7 digital, Playlouder, HMV, Tiscali Music and individual artists sites.

In terms of price each sites vary, where some sites you may purchase and individual song for a set price i.e. iTunes and HMV. Some sites such as Napster work on a subscription model, whereby you can download as many songs a month as you wish.

In terms of paying most sites require a debit/credit card, so make sure the site is secure, or if you’re too young, many shops now sell vouchers for sites.

Streaming

Some sites may let you preview a song or video by ‘streaming’. Streaming is a form of viewing media without actually downloading the information, essentially listening to or watching media ‘live’. This is a good way to preview the product you wish to buy before actually purchasing.

How do I use my downloaded music?

Once you have downloaded your music you may use your songs in different ways. You can choose to just listen to your music only from your computer, but why stop there! You can put your music onto a portable MP3 player, so you can listen to your favourite tunes anyway your like or alternatively you can put your music onto a CD.

Another year has passed us by so it’s a good time to review the year and see what songs top the sales for the year 2011. As mentioned in our review last year, there are similar reviews. Ours is different in that it shows what people wanted to sing last year and not just what they wanted to listen to. No review can be completely accurate but we feel the following lists give a good review of the best music that came out in 2011 and that karaoke singers were requesting.

2011 Top Karaoke Pop Songs

#1 – Rolling In The Deep – Adele (Many people assume Adele to be a black singer because of the sound of her voice but she’s not. What you hear from her are powerful vocals with the feel of emotion behind every note. That is exactly what a good singer wants from a song. The challenge for any singer with ‘Rolling In The Deep’ is matching the emotion and feeling that Adele puts in her original version. Of course you can get away with not being able to match Adele’s vocal quality and still please your audience if you’re a six year old girl singing this song with all your heart, as did Alexa Narvaez on YouTube with currently over 13 million views.)

#2 – Someone Like You – Adele (Yes, Adele comes in with the top two Pop songs for 2011. ‘Someone Like You’ speaks of a person coming to terms with the fact that her past lover has moved on. She wishes him the best and sings that she will find ‘someone like you’, claiming to have come to terms with the status of their break-up but obviously revealing otherwise. Perhaps this song became so popular because most of us have had our hearts broken in the same way that this song relates.)

#3 – Party Rock Anthem – LMFAO with Lauren Bennett & Goonrock (Well I thought LMFAO must be a band, with possibly each letter of this group’s name representing one of their members. Man, am I ever out of the loop. LMFAO is an acronym for Laughing My Freaking Ass Off. LMFAO is actually a duo composed of Motown founder’s Berry Gordy’s youngest son Stefan aka Redfoo and his grandson Skyler aka SkyBlu. The song was one of the most popular dance songs of the year. If it’s fun to dance to then it must be fun to sing.)

#4 – On The Floor – Jennifer Lopez & Pitbull (If anybody remembers the Lambada from 1989 then you’ll no doubt notice the borrowed beat for the main riff. What can we expect for J-Lo’s next big single? Maybe a reworking use of the main riff from ‘Islands In The Stream’ or ‘Afternoon Delight’.)

#5 – You And I – Lady Gaga (Unlike most of Lady Gaga’s tunes and maybe just a shade less successful as some of Gaga’s dance songs, this tune was highly requested as a karaoke song. ‘You And I’ is a bluesy, rock and country inspired ballad that mildly samples the classic Queen song ‘We Will Rock You’.)

#6 – Moves Like Jagger – Maroon 5 with Christina Aguilera (This song has a catchy hook and was popular among the karaoke crowd, and what has made it more appealing is that it is a female/male duet.)

#7 – Mr. Know It All – Kelly Clarkson (The original American Idol is still going strong five studio albums later. This song once again capitalizes on strong vocals and the hook ‘you don’t know a thing about me’ will stay in your head long after the last note of the song is played.)

#8 – Lighters – Bad Meets Evil & Bruno Mars (Bad Meets Evil is a duo consisting of rappers Royce da 5’9″ and Eminem. This duo actually was formed before Eminem gained his mainstream popularity in 1999, they broke up and now have since reunited. The song ‘Lighters’ is an alternative hip-hop song, different from hard core rap, especially with the added vocals of Bruno Mars.)

#9 – We Found Love – Rihanna (Rihanna once again hits the top of the charts with a catchy dance song. Many versions of this song also list Calvin Harris in the credits but we have not heard a duet version or any version that feature vocals other than Rihanna’s.)

#10 – I Do – Colbie Caillat (Like Colbie Caillat’s first single Bubbly, this song is a feel good, happy-go-lucky sunny day song that speaks of taking relationships to the next level. A perfect tune for the optimistic romantic.)

Honorable Mention:

Mistletoe – Justin Bieber (Some people may wonder why Justin Bieber is once again not on the top 10. He also didn’t make the top ten with any of his songs in 2010, possibly because although his songs have a broad appeal, when it comes to singing them there will be a much smaller audience. Collectively karaoke versions of his songs sold more than any other artist in 2011; Justin Bieber was the best selling Karaoke artist of 2011. The late season release of ‘Mistletoe’ nearly made the top 10. It was highly requested in late November and December. Many long for a fresh, new holiday song and this song filled that need precisely.)

Top 2011 Karaoke Country Songs

#1 – Dirt Road Anthem – Jason Aldean (This song talks about country life but adds a little ‘country rap’ in the mix. Very popular tune and choice for karaoke singers.)

#2 – Just Fishin’ – Trace Adkins (This song is about a father and daughter fishing together. Another feel good country song that pulls on your heart strings.”)

#3 – Country Girl (Shake It For Me) – Luke Bryan (This song is quite different from the earlier hit by Luke Bryan ‘Rain Is A Good Thing’. The title should be a dead giveaway that this song is not a ballad or a story song. It is a coming-right-at-you dance tune that caught on and became one of the most requested country songs to sing.)

#4 – Hell On Heels – Pistol Annies (There are some songs that are country cross overs; songs that can be played on both the Pop Charts and the Country Charts. Not this song, it’s definitely country. The Pistol Annies make a statement of a woman’s wrath, singing ‘sugar daddy I’m comin’ for you’. )

#5 – You Lie – The Band Perry (Another country tune about an unhappy relationship. You lie like a Persian rug, like a coon dog basking in the sun, like a penny in the parking lot. It seems many a country song is about that bitter feeling that one gets when they find out that their significant other isn’t so significant and people just love to sing about it.)

#6 – Honey Bee – Blake Shelton (This catchy tune did well on the Billboard 100 as well as going Number 1 on the country charts. The broad appeal of the song (and the fact that people were singing it) helped put it into the top ten of our list.)

#7 – Barefoot Blue Jean Night – Jake Owen (This song reminisces about the fun one had on his southern summer barefoot blue jean night. His buddy Frankie got hooked up with a Cadillac with horns on the hood! )

#8 – Story Of Us – Taylor Swift (an upbeat tempo song that by it’s title might indicate the song would be about a happy relationship. Unfortunately the chorus is ‘the story of us is a tragedy now.’)

#9 – This Is Country Music – Brad Paisley (Though not as commercially successful as some of Brad Paisley’s earlier hits, ‘This Is Country Music’ epitomizes what many feel a country song is all about. Country music fans can take pride in that their music often has some substance in it’s lyrics or message, which is not the norm with a pop tune.)

#10 – Just A Kiss – Lady Antebellum (Lady Antebellum songs are very popular in the karaoke world because of their duet capability. The way that Charles Kelley and Hillary Scott effortlessly switch lead vocals in their original renditions make many singers want to do the same in the karaoke versions. The challenge is finding two singers with the same vocal abilities of Lady Antebellum’s lead singers.)

So, once again, another year has given us a slew of new music. So you, the karaoke singer, need to stop singing the same old tune. Again I basically need a list of Artists who’ve drawn or painted the different seasons i.e Monet’s poplars. Artists who’ve drawn the same picture but at different times of the year and so different seasons would be great but those who’ve painted different seasons intentionally but not necessarily painted the same place are welcome too.

Many artists, most notably the Impressionist and Post-Impressionist artists, painted several versions of a picture, apart from the well-recognized ones. Claude Monet and Paul Cézanne were two of them. Vincent van Gogh was a Post-Impressionist artist who also painted in subject matter that represented a variety of seasons.

Monet’s series of paintings, known as his Cathedral Series, includes a painting titled in English, ‘Rouen Cathedral, West Facade, Sunlight’ (1894). Another painting is called ‘Rouen Cathedral, Sunset’ (1892-1894). The series is a depiction of the Cathedral of Rouen at different times of the day and in different seasons. It is a noteworthy example.

Paul Cézanne painted a number of renditions of one subject, Mont Ste-Victoire. The mountain does not change much according to season or time of day. Cézanne deliberately painted over 30 versions of this mountain in order to express the idea of permanence. Put another way, he painted Mont Ste-Victoire in order to express his belief that “beneath sifting appearances was an essential, unchanging armature.” zt is for this reason that he could have used changing facets for portraying the same subject.

If you look up the Fauve artists, such as André Derain with his picture of ‘Big Ben’ (1905), for example,you might find variations of one painting. Also, the Fauve artist Henri Matisse is known to have painted several canvases of one subject.

You might find some seasonal variations in the paintings of American Symbolist painter Albert Pinkham Ryder (1847-1917). He distinguished himself for his seascapes.

This article will help you understand the in’s and out’s of the pet portrait business, give you some key things to think about while looking for just the right pet portrait artist, and provide answers to some questions that you may have.

1. Finding an artist - Pet portrait artists are not as common as one would think. Many artists are completely intimidated by the idea of representing someone’s loved one, even if it is ‘just a dog.’ Portraiture, whether it is human, dog, or horse, is a specialized field and most artists will not attempt it. So, your first step in finding a portrait artist is to confine your search specifically for artists positioning themselves as pet portrait artists. Don’t ask Aunt Mary to paint your dog if you haven’t seen any examples of Mary’s attempts at dogs or you may be stuck with a painting that you hate and that Aunt Mary expects to see in the place of honor when she comes for a visit. Are they consistently good across their portfolio? Or are some works great and others so-so?
Do they use colors that you like? Many artists stick to a particular ‘palette’ so if you like bright colors and the artist only uses browns and grays and blues, keep looking.
How well do they do the animals’ eyes? (the eyes are the windows to the soul…bad eye, bad portrait!)
Do they have testimonials? This is a nice-to-have, but it helps to know that other patrons, such as yourself, have been happy with the overall experience of having their pet portrait done.
Do they work in a medium that you like, ie. watercolor, oil, or charcoal?

TIP: If you like an artist’s work, but not the medium that they work in, you might ask if they work in the medium of your choice, but if they don’t, I wouldn’t suggest commissioning a work from them unless you have seen examples of their work in that medium. Getting good at one medium takes practice and time. If the artist hasn’t ever worked in that medium, keep looking.

3. How Much Does it Cost? - a good pet portrait can be had for somewhere between $ 200 and $ 1000, depending on the size and medium. Oils typically cost more due to the extended process and expense of the materials. Pencil and charcoal are often the least expensive, with acrylic and watercolors rounding out the middle. Bigger pieces of art are, of course, more expensive.

This will get you on their calendar, especially during the busy season before the Holidays, and will be a commitment on your part that you are going to purchase this portrait when it is complete. Expect a deposit to range from 20% to 50% or more. Most artists take credit cards, PayPal and money orders. When you contact your artist, ask them what sort of payment methods they accept.Production: This is where the pet artist produces your work. Expect good artists to have a backlog of work and that you will be put into their queue. It might be a few weeks or even more, before you get your portrait, so keep that in mind. The artist will typically email you a photograph of your portrait when they have completed it for your approval.Approval: Every artist that I know wants more than anything for you to be happy with your portrait, so be sure to ask the artist about the approval process. If you are not happy with the work, you should not have to purchase it. Some artists may ask that you forfeit your deposit, but most artists will work with you until you are happy with the finished result.Payment and Shipping: most artists expect to be paid in full before they will ship you your portrait. Packing and shipping costs are typically paid by you, so talk about that with your artist before you commission a work. Overseas shipping and customs costs might make it prohibitive, depending on your budget, so look into that before you say ‘yes’. Large works will often be rolled in a tube to save shipping costs, but this adds some work on your end. If the work is on canvas, you will have to take it to your local framers to be ‘re-stretched’ and then framed, if you wish.Receiving Your Art: most artists will ensure that your portrait is ‘ready to hang’ when you take it out of the shipping container. If your portrait is on canvas, it should be pre-strung with a wire for your convenience. Be sure to ask if your art will be ‘ready to hang’ when you get it. Art that can’t be hung easily and right away is like a battery-powered toy for Christmas and no batteries!

I believe most paintings deal with that as a theme. If you look at pictures of Dali where he paints his Gala… the obvious theme may not be love, but he can’t really help it being a theme. You can just tell he really loved that woman.
